Summer in Colorado is so awesome. Last weekend was the typical fun-filled weekend and now that it's over we're ready to recover. On Saturday I took the kids out so that Abby would have some time to get some things done. We hiked up Animas Mountain. It begins on the North side of town and after about 10 switchbacks starts heading up towards Animas Valley. Dylan surprised me at how good he was at hiking and keeping up. I carried him off and on, but he did very well. He kept searching for and collecting bear berries (off of pinion/juniper trees). Once we got up high on the mountain, we had some great views of town, the valley, and the river. We caught a lizard for a few seconds, and we saw a deer leg up in a tree which must have been where some big cat had kept his kill.
After our hike, we went to the pool at the Rec Center. We swam for a long time, going down the big slide, and playing in the lazy river. Then we all went to the cold pool; Holli did several flips and dives off the diving board and swam a few times all the way across the length of the lap pool; meanwhile Dylan and I played in the deep water with a basketball and kick boards.
Once home Abby presented us with her catch of the day, which were some steaks and lobster. We grilled those along with some hot dogs for the kids. Following that we built a fire in our deck pit and grilled some-mores and then turned in.
On Sunday, we went on a very long river trip. We started at Trimble Lane and it took about 5 hours to get to where we normally put in. The water was very slow and Abby and I really got a workout paddling that whole way. Then once we got to our normal put-in (32nd Street), the remainder was about an hour of fun on the small rapids.
That it for our weekend, now I'm headed out for a lunch ride!
